We often hear that one of your biggest concerns is how to fund your study abroad experience. This is certainly a valid consideration, and we want you to know that there is funding available! There are many scholarships designed specifically for education abroad.
There are several national scholarships, destination-based, and program-based scholarships, as well as databases for searching for study abroad scholarships. The Office of Study Abroad can guide you on the application process so please contact our office for assistance when applying to these scholarships.
Undergraduate students who participate in a University of Miami study abroad program may apply for a stipend to help defray costs associated with studying abroad. Special consideration will be given to students with demonstrated need who participate in UM semester programs in underrepresented locations: Latin America, Asia and Africa. Students must apply to their program of interest prior to initiating the Study Abroad Stipend application. Stipend Application Deadlines:
The Belton G. & Margaret T. Aldridge scholarship is intended for meritorious undergraduate students pursuing studies in tropical or subtropical biology who have demonstrated financial need. The Aldridge Scholarship can be used for students to participate in study abroad programs in the tropics run by the Department of Biology. The scholarship will be awarded based upon the Department of Biology review of competing applications. Eligibility Requirements: Interested students should submit all scholarship requirements in one envelope to the Biology Department Office (215 Cox Science Bldg.) to the attention of Dr. Kathleen Sealey before November 1 of the semester they apply to their respective program. The John S. McCain International Scholarship for Military Families (Gilman-McCain Scholarship) is a congressionally funded initiative of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs at the U.S. Department of State and named after the late senator John S. McCain from Arizona. The Gilman-McCain Scholarship provides awards of $5,000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel during the time of application (including Air Force, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Army, Army National Guard, Army Reserve, Coast Guard, Coast Guard Reserve, Marine Corps, Marine Corps Reserve, Navy, Navy Reserve, Space Force, NOAA Commissioned Corps, and USPHS Commissioned Corps) to study or intern abroad on credit-bearing programs. Applicants must be recipients of any type of Title IV federal financial aid during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving Title IV federal financial aid during their study abroad program or internship.
Awards of $2,000 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents with demonstrated financial need.
Scholarships of $5,000 per semester or $10,000 for the year are available to students studying abroad. There is no limit to specific programs, destinations, or fields of study. Priority is given to underrepresented students – including but not limited to minorities and to students going to non-traditional destinations. Please note that students must apply one year in advance of the semester or year in which they plan to study abroad.

Students of Italian descent are eligible to apply for a scholarship of up to $5,000 to study abroad at John Cabot University in Rome, for one or two semesters.
The US-Japan Bridging Foundation awards scholarships to US undergraduate students to study for one semester or academic year in Japan. The Foundation aims to expand the opportunities for study abroad in Japan to help prepare America’s young people to assume future global leadership roles. Bridging Scholars are awarded scholarships of up to $5,000 for the academic year, which provide for travel and daily cost-of-living expenses.
The Freeman-ASIA award provides need-based funding to assist the recipient with the cost of the study abroad program and related expenses, including airfare, basic living costs, local transportation, books, etc. Freeman-ASIA accepts applications from U.S. citizens or permanent residents studying at the undergraduate level at a two-year or four-year college or university who demonstrate financial need to study abroad in East or Southeast Asia.
The Toshizo Watanabe Endowed Scholarship Fund provides financial assistance to undergraduates/graduate students for a semester or year-long study abroad program in Japan. The scholarship will support up to the full cost of attendance to the study abroad program of the applicant’s choice. The scholarship program grants awards to recipients in amounts determined by financial need and other qualifications.
ThinkSwiss is a scholarship program managed by the Office of Science, Technology, and Higher Education at the Embassy of Switzerland in Washington, D.C. The program is funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI) and is supported by the Embassy of Switzerland in Ottawa, Canada. The aim of the program is to promote research opportunities in Switzerland for American and Canadian students and to foster exchange between Swiss, U.S., and Canadian universities and research institutions.
A scholarship valued at £500 awarded to a number of students who will be studying at a BUTEX Full Member institution. Full member institutions that are UM exchange partner institutions include: Students can find a list of BUTEX Full Member institutions here and learn how to apply here.
Full scholarship (tuition, housing, meals, airfare) for Freshmen and Sophomores to spend the summer studying at a UK university while exploring that country’s rich cultural heritage. Preference is given to students who have never been to the UK and have had minimal experiences traveling abroad. Minimum GPA to apply is 3.7. Deadline to apply is usually early-February, but check the website for more details.
This scholarship opportunity supports American undergraduate students of limited financial means for short-term, credit-bearing study at a Welsh university. The award allows students to strengthen their skills and expand their educational experiences while living and learning in Wales. Successful applicants will receive a study grant of up to $5,000, to be used toward tuition, housing, travel, and related costs for up to one academic year at any of the Welsh Universities. The University of Cardiff in Wales is a UM Exchange Partner.
