Proposing a New Exchange Partnership

An exchange program is a type of study abroad opportunity in which UM students enroll for a semester or year in courses at a foreign institution, and in exchange, students from the foreign university enroll for a semester or year at UM.

Those interested in proposing an exchange program should meet with the Executive Director of Study Abroad to discuss the academic goals of the proposed partnership.

The faculty member or requestor should provide the following details:

  • Demonstrate the strategic priority of the exchange: how will it benefit UM undergraduate students?
  • Provide evidence of student interest: will this exchange be balanced?
  • If UM already has agreements to provide students an opportunity to study in the proposed country or locations, what new possibilities does this partnership offer?
  • How will this exchange benefit the broader UM community?

Additionally, the requesting party should provide the following:

  • Confirm that English-language coursework is offered at this location.
  • Provide information on how the coursework offered through this institution is aligned with courses required for UM majors
  • Commit to recruiting no fewer than 3 outgoing students per academic year
  • Designate faculty and/or staff in your unit who will be responsible for working with Study Abroad on an ongoing basis
  • Accept the responsibility for the promotion, recruitment, and academic advising for outbound students in addition to academic support for incoming students

Academic units and prospective program proposers should be aware of the following policies related to the exchange program development process:

  • No students can be exchanged until there is a signed Agreement between the institutions.
  • A minimum of 12-18 months is required to implement a new exchange partnership.
  • No incoming students can be accepted to UM until there are committed outbound UM students.
  • If an exchange program becomes inactive or involves too few students, UM Study Abroad will consult with the academic unit about the viability of the exchange.
