Emergency Procedures

Please review the University of Miami resources and steps to take in the event of an emergency situation or natural disaster.

Personal or Medical Emergency

If you are in a personal or medical emergency, call the following emergency numbers:

General Emergencies call 911 from any phone
UM Police Department (UMPD) call:
- 305-284-6666 (24-7 number)
- 855-828-4666 (Toll-free number links directly to UMPD)

Hurricane Preparedness

Hurricane Season runs from June 1st until November 30th. Students and their families should plan ahead and develop their own personal emergency plans in the event Miami is threatened by a storm.

If the University of Miami is in a disaster or emergency situation, you must do the following:

Be informed and prepared by reviewing Hurricane Preparedness and Information for Students and Parents.
Carry your Study Abroad Emergency Contact Card with you

Remember to keep the Office of Study Abroad Emergency Contact Card with you at all times.
Take important items and documents with you during an evacuation or relocation
Students must develop a plan on where they will go if an evacuation is ordered. If you are being evacuated or choose to leave, remember to take with you you the following:
- Passport with your SEVIS-issued I-20 or DS 2019 and your I-94
- Financial records
- Plane tickets
- Checks for your checking account and credit cards
- Purse and wallet
- Keys
- IDs
Update CaneLink with your evacuation address & contact information

Provide your phone number and your evacuation address, the location of where you are taking shelter during the emergency or disaster, in CaneLink.
Update your Study Abroad Advisor with your evacuation address & contact information

If you change locations prior to the reopening of the University, let your study abroad advisor know the new location and phone number.
Complete the Check-In & Reunification Form

Students who are forced to evacuate or temporarily relocate to another area should notify UM of their new location and contact information by going to the Recover Miami website at https://recover.miami.edu/. This is the online site where you should “check in” following a hurricane.
Keep in touch with your family

Remain in regular contact with your family and keep them updated with your location and contact information during an evacuation or relocation.
