Application and Admission

Your journey as an exchange student starts with your home institution selecting and nominating you to study at the University of Miami. Nominated students then complete an online application. The information below provides an overview of the exchange student application process.

Exchange Student Application

  • 1. Seek a nomination from your home institution

    To apply for the incoming exchange program at the University of Miami, students must be nominated by one of UM's exchange partner institutions listed here. 

  • 2. Nomination process

    The student's home institution nominates the exchange applicant by emailing the following information to Incoming Exchange Program Coordinator Alejandra Grijak at axg5455@miami.edu: 

    • The applicant's full name 
    • The applicant's preferred email address 
    • The applicant's intended term of attendance (Fall Semester, Spring Semester, or Academic Year) 
    • Copy of the applicant's passport ID page (passport must be valid for at least 6 months following the semester end date) 

  • 3. Eligible students complete UM's online application

    Once nominated, applicants will receive an email from the University of Miami MyStudyAbroad system with their usernames and temporary passwords to access the online application through the My StudyAbroad application.  

  • 4. Supplemental application documents

    Applicants will submit the following supporting documents to their home institution:

    1. Official transcript of ALL universities attended 
    2. Bank letter in ENGLISH on official bank letterhead stating that the exchange student has a minimum of US $18,906 per semester or US $37,811 for the 2024-2025 academic year. This number is an estimate of student expenses for 2024-2025. Please confirm the required amount with your home advisor, as this amount will be updated every semester. Internet banking printouts are NOT acceptable. 
    3. Statement of Financial Responsibility Form—must be completed and signed 
    4. Proof of English proficiency
      • IELTS Minimum 6.5
      • TOEFL (Internet-based) Minimum 80
      • TOEFL (Computer-based) Minimum 213
      • TOEFL (Paper-based) Minimum 550

    Exam validity: TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo exams are valid for two years from the date of the original exam. If your scores are more than two years old, you will need to take a new exam to be considered for admission.

Acceptance Process

  • 1. Application review

    The application will be reviewed, and if it is complete AND approved, an electronic I-20 will be created for the student. 

  • 2. Acceptance letter and I-20 form

    The accepted student is sent the following documents directly via email: 

    • Conditional acceptance letter
    • Electronic I-20 Form.

    Students that submitted their application by the deadline can expect their I-20 to arrive by:
    • Spring Semester: mid-November (subject to change)
    • Fall Semester: mid-June (subject to change)

  • 3. Application status: Conditionally Accepted

    The UM advisor changes the application status to Conditionally Accepted in the student's My StudyAbroad portal for students who have been accepted.

  • 4. Additional tasks in My StudyAbroad portal

    The applicant receives communication from the UM Study Abroad Office and Program Coordinator with information on UM processes and arrival.

  • UM billable fees

    Exchange students DO NOT pay UM Tuition. Exchange students are responsible for the following UM fees which will be billed to the student's UM account in CaneLink:

    • Activity Fee
    • Athletic Fee
    • Health Insurance
    • Health and Counseling Centers Fee
    • Student Center Complex Fee
    • Wellness Fee
    • Course Materials Fee

  • Health insurance

    University of Miami health insurance is required for all international students. UM does not accept any outside insurance policies. Waivers are not permitted, regardless of additional or existing coverage. For more information visit UM's Insurance Plan page.  

    Health Insurance Rates: 

    • Undergraduate, Graduate, and International Students:
      • Annual coverage: August 15, 2024 to August 14, 2025: $4,041
    • Annual rates will be pro-rated for fall and spring semesters

  • Expenses not billed by UM

    Expenses the student will pay directly to the provider include:

    • Food and Housing
    • Personal
    • Transportation (local)
     

    Review UM's Cost of Attendance. Keep in mind expenses are listed for a full academic year. Divide expenses in half for an estimate of semester expenses.
